Seasonal eating in Bali! Is there such a thing?

Editorial Team | October 9, 2024 | 0 comment |

There are less pronounced seasonal changes in Bali than in temperate climates. Many of us will remember the sweetness of strawberries in June, and how pumpkins seem extra cosy in October. The magic of seasonal eating is enjoying fruits and veggies when they provide the most flavour and nutrition.

While the seasons are not as pronounced in Bali, there are still variations in climate and produce availability throughout the year. Some indigenous plants ‘just want to grow’ throughout the year, whatever the season and these are often the most organic and nutritious. But what are these plants and how to find them? Well, see more below, shop with us!

At Bali Direct Store 98% of our fruits and veggies are sourced locally, which is the first big step to honouring the seasonality of produce. Exceptions are fuji apple, pears and kiwi. On average 55% of our fresh produce is organic – meaning food that is produced without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other artificial agents. We have a network of organic suppliers and are constantly on the look-out for more. These include growers who use principles of regenerative agriculture and permaculture.

If we do not have it an organic supply of a particular vegetable or fruit, it is unlikely to be available on Bali. If a vegetable on our website is listed as non-organic it is because an organic variety is not available in Bali. It’s a big claim but we will put it out there. If you can show us that we are wrong, or even better point us to a potential supplier, we will eat our words!

There are a number of ‘hyper-local’ fruits and vegetables indigenous to Bali that grow either wild or naturally whatever the season. These are plants that are abundant, nutritious and ‘want to grow.’ Here are some examples: water spinach, moringa, winged bean, bitter gourd, amaranth, banana flower, ice-cream bean, fern.

Want to know more? Get in touch! And if you have a local fruit or veggie that you would love for us to source for you, let us know!
