Heirloom tomatoes, with their unusual shapes, vibrant colors, and rich flavors, have become a favorite among chefs, gardeners, and food enthusiasts around the world. Unlike the standard red, perfectly round supermarket tomatoes, heirlooms are a window into the past, offering a taste of history with every bite. At the most basic level, heirloom tomatoes are varieties that have been passed down, through several generations, because of their valued characteristics. What a miracle that these seeds have crossed space and time to take root in the fertile soils of Bedugul. Not just a miracle, an inspired vision by Puritomato team too! Read on!
Meet Demi
Demi is the powerhouse behind Puritomato. She started her heirloom tomato farm seed by seed during the lock-down. Trial and error and a lot of loss later, she has hit her stride.
The Story in a Name
Green Cherry, Tula, Crazy Berry, Chef Fave, Cream Sausage, Sunrise, Great White, King Beauty, Choco Lighting, and Thai Pink are some of the names that go for those beautiful plants that take root on the highland, Bedugul Bali.
Why Eat Heirlooms
Apart from their amazing flavours and colours, heirlooms are good for biodiversity and the health and resilience of tomato crops. Each variety has its own flavour profile too, so these are great for experimenting with recipes.
Growing Heirlooms
Puritomato use a hydroponic system to grow these heirlooms. These heirlooms are open-pollinated with 60 different varieties currently grown. An amazing preservation of tomato diversity for future generations.
Heirloom on Crackers
Take a Nico or a Cook and Baker seed cracker, thinly slice a variety of heirlooms, put on cracker and drizzle with oil. Perhaps play with some of our salt varieties – smoked, himalayan, herb. So simple.
Caprese
Caprese is an Italian all-time favorite with tomato, burrata and basil. We have all the products to make a totally local caprese. No packing, planes, shipments. Its a very satisfying feeling. If you want a vegan version, we have that too!
Heirlooms, Olive Oils, and Salts
Once you have a few varieties of heirlooms sliced and ready to go with some infused olive oils and a variety of salts you can enjoy round after round of variations on one of the most delicious combinations ever. In our humble opinion! Let us know if you agree!
